Jessie Alice Webster [we.7.10]

Jessie Alice Webster was the tenth child of John Hearne Webster & Euphemia Kay Stewart born christened June 30th, 1863 at St Mary, Reading Berks.

In 1871& 1881 she was living with the family at Prospect St, Reading.

In April-June 1889 Jessie married Howard Brinsley Evans at Christchurch, Hamps. Howard was born Jan-March 1865 at Bristol, Gloucs.

In 1891 Jessie & Howard were living at Cranbourne, Westerfield Rd, Ipswich, & Howard’s occupation was a chemical manure manufacturer. They had a 1 year old daughter Gladys Howard, & visiting was Fanny Butcher, 47, born in India. They had 2 nurses, a maid & a cook.

In the 1901 census Jessie was living at Constitution Hill, Ipswich & her occupation was given as ‘laundry’. The family had now grown to include Gladys (11), Stewart Nicholson (9), Gwynnedd Maud (8) & Phyllis Mary (6). There was also a cook, housemaid & nurse. Howard was recorded returning from Colombo, Ceylon in 1900 when he was listed on the ship’s manifest as a coffee planter. Husband Howard was not with the family but boarding at Uxbridge Rd, Rickmansworth, Herts & his occupation was described as a coffee planter.

Howard emigrated to USA & arrived in New York on May 13th, 1904.  He was recorded in the 1910 US census as boarding in Soledad, Monterey, California. 

In 1911 Jessie & daughters Gladys, Gwynedd & Phyllis were still at 29 Constitution Hill, Ipswich.  Jessie was described as being of private means.  They had a general servant to help look after the 9-roomed house. 

Jessie died June 26th, 1914 at 6 Paget Rd, Ipswich.  Probate was granted November 23rd November, 1915 to brother-in-law Richard Pearson M.D. (husband of Jessie’s sister Edith).  Jessie’s effects were £1,813.9s.

Son Stewart Nicholson served as a lieutenant with the Royal Flying Corps during WW1 & was with the 6th Suffolk Regiment.  He was killed in action on July 9th, 1917.

In 1920 Howard was living in Paraiso, Monterey, California.  By 1930 Howard was an inmate at Ukiah, Mendocina State Hospital, California & he was still recorded there in 1940.
Howard of Napa State Hospital, Imola, California USA died on February 19th, 1956.  Administration of his estate was granted in Bristol to daughter Gwynedd Maud Marshall, widow, on February 13th 1957.  Howard’s effects were £1500.5s.8d. in England.
